The Ficus ‘Zelkova’ Bonsai is not a separate species but a styling technique of Ficus microcarpa (also called Indian Laurel Fig or Banyan Fig), trained in the manner of the Japanese Zelkova (Zelkova serrata). The Japanese Zelkova is a highly regarded deciduous tree in bonsai culture, admired for its broom-style form and fine branching. By contrast, the Ficus Zelkova bonsai replicates this style while using the tropical, evergreen Ficus microcarpa, allowing the “Zelkova look” to be enjoyed indoors year-round.

This bonsai is characterised by its sweeping trunk line, elegant nebari (surface roots), and a rounded, umbrella-like canopy created by dense twigging and careful pruning. Its glossy, oval leaves are naturally small and respond well to defoliation, enabling refinement and leaf reduction. The tree retains its foliage year-round indoors, unlike true Zelkova bonsai which are deciduous and outdoor-grown.

The Ficus Zelkova Bonsai is particularly popular with beginners and indoor growers because it combines the beauty of the Zelkova form with the forgiving nature of ficus trees.

Ficus ‘Zelkova’ Bonsai – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Place near a sunny south- or west-facing window indoors. In summer, it can be placed outdoors in light shade. Avoid draughts and cold windowsills.

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Ensure free drainage and do not let the roots sit in water. Reduce watering slightly in winter but never allow the rootball to dry out completely.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 18–28°C. Keep above 12°C at all times.

  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is tolerated, but occasional misting or humidity trays will benefit the foliage.

Soil and Potting

Use a free-draining bonsai mix containing akadama, pumice, and lava rock, or peat-free compost blended with perlite. Repot every 2–3 years in spring to refresh the soil and prune roots.

Feeding

Feed every 2–3 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced bonsai fertiliser. Reduce to monthly in autumn and stop in winter.

Pruning and Training

  • Pruning: Regularly pinch back new shoots to 2–3 leaves to maintain the rounded Zelkova-style canopy.

  • Defoliation: Partial or full defoliation in summer can be used to reduce leaf size and increase ramification.

  • Wiring: Responds well to wiring, but monitor carefully as wires can scar the smooth bark quickly.

Growth and Maturity

A vigorous grower, allowing rapid shaping and canopy refinement. Over time, the trunk thickens and develops attractive roots and character.

Common Issues

  • Leaf drop: Often caused by stress from relocation, underwatering, or draughts. Usually temporary.

  • Yellowing leaves: Typically overwatering.

  • Pests: May attract scale insects, mealybugs, or spider mites indoors.

Background and Benefits

This bonsai style takes inspiration from Zelkova serrata, a classic species in Japanese bonsai, but substitutes tropical Ficus microcarpa for year-round evergreen beauty indoors. It symbolises strength, resilience, and harmony. With its umbrella-shaped canopy and graceful trunk, the Ficus Zelkova Bonsai is both a beautiful display tree and an excellent introduction to bonsai practice.

Almost perfect...upraised logo should be left off
This toy is great for relentless chewers with strong jaws! It would be almost perfect if it didn't have a "K9" logo in raised rubber on it. That is the place that my aggressive chewer shepherd/bulldog mix focuses on and is able to get small chunks off. Without that logo, he would chew the ball more evenly, instead of fixating on that one spot. He loves this ball and has chewed on it for about an hour off & on each of the 11 days he has had it. Although it is very durable so far, the flaw is the upraised logo.

Perfect for High-Drive Dogs & Surprisingly Durable (six month review)
I use this ring ball for structured fetch and tug sessions with my high-drive German Shepherd mix (91 lbs. at 10 mon.), and it’s easily the best toy we’ve added to our routine. What makes it truly exceptional is how it allows my dog to engage in the full canine predatory sequence: • Chase: He locks in visually and bolts after the ring when I throw it. • Grab & Hold: He brings it back, pins it against my leg, and bites down firmly (the toy—not the leg!)—his way of acting out the natural catch-and-control behavior. • Unalive & Tug: We finish with a strong tug session, which satisfies his instinct to grip and shake—basically his version of “making the toy unalive.” • Settle & Chew: Afterward, he relaxes with a chew toy or eats—completing the full physical and mental cycle in a healthy, balanced way. Durability is outstanding—this toy stands up to intense tug sessions with no tearing or damage, even with a 91 lb powerhouse. My senior dog also joins in for double tug play, and it holds up beautifully to that too. I don’t leave this toy down for chewing—it’s not a chew toy. I use it specifically for fetch and tug, then put it away when we’re done. This keeps it exciting and extends its lifespan. My dog has other chew toys he can use freely throughout the day. This isn’t just another fetch toy—when thoughtful it provides a structured, instinct-satisfying experience that’s mentally enriching and physically engaging. If you have a high-drive or working breed, or a dog who thrives on interactive play, this ring ball is 100% worth it.

This baby "takes a licking and keeps on ticking"!
Pattern Name: Platypus
I have three Labs who LOVE playing tug of war with each other and their human family. I bought this stretchy plushie on a whim and it has become one of their favorites! Our pups pull HARD and this thing can TAKE IT without ripping or losing it's elasticity. It does have some holes and has lost an ear, but it is still functional - just a bit raggedy. ANY plushie that lasts more than a couple days with these ladies is a winner...and this one has been played with daily for several WEEKS at this point! If you have strong pullers who also like the soft, squeaky feel of a plushie, this toy is a sure bet.
